The IKEA MALM is one of the most popular bed frames in New York City โ clean lines, affordable price, available in multiple sizes. But assembling it in a small NYC apartment can be a real challenge, especially if you're doing it solo or in a tight space.
This guide walks you through the process step by step, with NYC-specific tips on dealing with small rooms and tight hallways.
What You'll Need
- IKEA MALM bed frame (all boxes โ check before starting)
- IKEA Allen key (included) or a powered screwdriver with Allen bit
- Rubber mallet (optional but helpful)
- A second pair of hands โ the MALM is a two-person job
- 30โ90 minutes depending on size and experience
NYC tip: Before you start, make sure all boxes fit through your apartment door and can reach the bedroom. MALM Queen and King panels are long and can be tricky in narrow hallways.
Step-by-Step Assembly
Unbox and sort all parts
Lay everything out on the floor. Match parts to the instruction sheet. Keep hardware bags organized โ the MALM uses multiple different bolt sizes.
Assemble the headboard
Attach the side rails to the headboard first. Tighten bolts only partially โ you'll need to adjust alignment later. Don't fully tighten anything until the whole frame is together.
Attach the footboard
Connect the footboard to the side rails. Have your helper hold the frame steady while you align the cam locks. This is where most people strip the bolts โ go slow.
Install the center support beam
The center rail runs lengthwise and prevents the bed from sagging. Make sure it clicks into place on both ends before moving on.
Install the slats
Place the slatted base (LURรY or LรNSET) across the frame. The slats should curve slightly upward โ this is intentional and provides better support.
Final tighten
Now tighten all bolts firmly. Check all cam locks are fully engaged. Gently press on the frame to test for wobble โ if it moves, find the loose connection.
Common MALM Assembly Mistakes
- Tightening bolts too early โ wait until the full frame is assembled before final tightening
- Wrong bolt size โ the MALM uses several different lengths, easy to mix up
- Skipping the center rail โ without it, the mattress will sag within weeks
- Solo assembly โ the side rails are awkward to hold alone, ask for help
- Wrong slat direction โ slats curve upward, not downward
How Long Does It Take?
For a first-timer: 60โ90 minutes for a Queen. For someone experienced: 30โ45 minutes. Add 15โ20 minutes if you're working in a tight NYC bedroom where you can't spread everything out.
MALM Sizes Available
- Twin (38" ร 75")
- Full (54" ร 75")
- Queen (60" ร 80")
- King (76" ร 80")
The Queen and King require the most effort โ more panels, more slats, heavier parts. These are the ones we most often get called to help with in NYC.
Just moved in? If you have multiple pieces to assemble โ bed, dresser, wardrobe โ it often makes more sense to hire a professional assembler. We can do a full bedroom in 2โ3 hours for less than the cost of a whole day struggling alone.
When to Call a Professional
MALM assembly is manageable if you have the time, space, and a helper. But in NYC, people often don't have any of those things. Here's when it makes sense to hire out:
- You have 3+ pieces to assemble on the same day
- Your bedroom is very small (common in Manhattan studios)
- You've assembled IKEA before and it took way longer than expected
- You don't want to risk stripping bolts or damaging the floor
